NERPO HOLDS A ‘SCORE-CARD’ SEMINAR ON LAND REFORM
11 Feb 2010

The Honourable Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, Mr. Gugile Nkwinti, has called on all South Africans to avoid Zimbabwe’s economic and political situation by collectively and speedily changing the landscape of the land reform programme. In his address at the NERPO’s Year End-Function last year, the Minister urged,

“.…if we want to avoid Zimbabwe’s economic and political instability, we need to collectively move swiftly and change the landscape of land ownership in South Africa. This is key in the country’s ability to achieve permanent peace and prosperity.....”

In light of the Minister’s call and as a follow-up to a meeting NERPO held with the Secretary-General of the ANC, Mr. Gwede Mantashe, the organization will soon be making a presentation at the ANC’s Economic Transformation Committee (ETC), to among other things, apprise the ETC of NERPO’s perspective of the land reform programme.

In preparation for this meeting, NERPO saw it fit that it enjoins all emerging farmers particularly those affected by the land reform programme as well as the key role players and facilitators of the land reform programme, to trash-out and closely look at challenges and successes of the land reform programme. NERPO also seeks to seize the opportunity and engage with key role players in the land reform programme on proposal/s for remedial action that will lead to a speedy and sustainable land reform programme.

Some of the key issues on the agenda include:

· Challenges of experienced by beneficiaries of Land redistribution;
· Impact of the Land Redistribution programme on Agricultural production;
· Treasury’s policy guidelines in support of the Land Reform programme; and
· New strategy on Land reform plans to correct current challenges facing land reform

The Seminar will be held at Weltervreeden Farm in Queenstown on the 18th February 2010, at 08h30.

This auspicious session precedes yet another NERPO’s informative and developmental event, the Eastern Cape Farmers Information Day and Graduation Ceremony for Junior Farm Managers who have completed NERPO/AgriSeta’s Learnership Programme in Animal Production.

The Farmers’ Information Day is a perfect platform for farmers to share and exchange information on how best to improve their livestock. Demonstration on the impact of farm infrastructure on farm management will be at the center stage of the Information Day.

The Farmers Information Day and Graduation will take place as follows:
