NERPO IS PLEASED WITH THE ANC's POLICY POSITION ON STOCK THEFT 19 Nov 2009
Following a strategic meeting that was held between the National Emergent Red Meat Producers’ Organization (NERPO) and the Secretary General of the African National Congress (ANC) Mr. Gwede Mantashe, at the Luthuli House this morning, the Group Managing Director of NERPO, Mr. Aggrey Mahanjana praised the ruling party, for its policy position on how its government plans to root-out stock theft in the country.
The meeting sought to appraise and seek the political intervention of the ruling party, on the pressing issues that are currently confronting South Africa’s emerging livestock farmers.
“We are pleased to note that the Secretary General has agreed and supported most of our concerns and his undertaking to consult with the respective party sub-committees and Ministries, as a way of getting direct interventions to challenges facing the emerging sector. Mr. Mantashe has assured us that the issue of stock theft is high on government’s agenda of curbing organised crime though it competes with other worrying criminal activities like, cash in transit heists, mall robberies and ATM bombings” Mahanjana said
Mahanjana was however not prepared to give away too much detail on the government’s strategy to root out stock theft, as he believes is an issue being discussed at the top level of government.
“NERPO was fortunate to have met the Secretary General few days after the Alliance Summit, because we have learned that the same issues were dealt with at the Summit, and government has been given a clear mandate on what needs to be done” he added
NERPO is also pleased to have been invited to submit some of its proposals to the Economic Transformation Committee (ECT) of the ANC for further discussion. ECT is a task team that is assigned to with dealing among other things with challenges facing the land reform programme and rural development as a whole.
“It is encouraging to realise that there are specifics of what policy direction government’s need to take, both at the political and administrative levels. Going forward, our task remains that of continuing to lobby for government’s direct support and execution of programmes and projects that will create an enabling environment within which to commercialise our members”. he concluded
NERPO is scheduled to meet with the Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, Mr. Gugile Nkwinti on the 27 November 2009, to seek the Minister’s intervention on matters relating to the review of the land reform policy with clarifying government’s stance on rural development and a comprehensive infrastructural development.
End.
