NEWLY ELECTED NWERPO’s CHAIRPERSON CALLS FOR POLITICAL STABILITY IN THE NORTH WEST GOVERNMENT
09 Oct 2009

The newly elected chairperson of the North West Red Meat Producers Organization (NWERPO) a provincial structure of the National Emergent Red Meat Producers Organization (NERPO), Mr. Victor Moagi, calls for political stability in the North West government.

“We have noted with dismay the chopping and changing of MECs and HoDs of the Department of Agriculture in the North West government administration. Although we have no intentions of interfering with the politics of the province, we are deeply concerned that the discontinuity of the political leadership in the North West government has become a nightmare and negatively impacts on the plans and service delivery within the agricultural sector” argued Moagi

His statement comes after his unanimous re-election as the new Chairperson of NWERPO at the provincial Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the Embassy Hall in Mmabatho, North West Province. Moagi is taking over the baton from Mr. Ramokoka Enos Lekgatle who has been at the helm since September 2006.

The 16 member Provincial Executive Committee of NWERPO resolved to take up the matter with the newly appointed Premier of the province, Ms Maureen Modiselle, and the National Working Committee of the ruling party.

Other newly elected members of the Executive Committee are as follows:

Mr. Simon Molefe Marobe (Bojanala District) : Deputy Chairperson
Mr. Lawrence Dikokwe (Ruth Mompati District) : Secretary
Mr. Ansley Ramphele (Kenneth Kaunda) : Deputy Secretary
Mrs Shirley Mpu (Bojanala District) : Treasurer

Among the delegates who graced the event was the Group Managing Director of NERPO Mr. Aggrey Mahanjana who praised the North West livestock emerging farmers for their commitment and understanding of livestock farming and development issues. “I was immensely encouraged by the commitment and understanding shown by the North West emerging livestock farmers, in particular their understanding of issues and dynamics of the emerging sector. I, however, still pick up that there is a need for capacity building in the leadership of NWERPO” he said

Other issues that will be taken up with the newly appointed MEC for Agriculture, Conservation, Environment and Rural Development in the province, Mr. Boitumelo Tshwene include:

• the negative effect of Land Restitution on the emerging farmers;
• collapse of veterinary and extension services in the province; and
• the inaccessibility of Land Bank financial products

The South Africa’s official mouthpiece of the emerging livestock farmers, NERPO, will hold its next provincial AGM in Queenstown, in the Chris Hani District municipal area, Eastern Cape on Wednesday, 14 Oct 2009.

The provincial AGMs are being held countrywide in preparation for the National Congress which will be held at the University of Pretoria (Onderstepoort Campus) at the City of Tshwane on Wednesday, 04 November 2009. Among the key speakers invited to honour this event will be the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Honourable Tina Joemat-Petterson, who is expected to render the keynote address.
