NERPO URGES GOVERNMENT FOR SPEEDY COMPENSATION FOR VELD FIRE VICTIMS
09 Sep 2009

The Group Managing Director of the National Emergent Red Meat Producers Organization (NERPO), Mr. Aggrey Mahanjana has expressed deepest sympathy to all livestock farmers who have lost their livestock due to recent rage of wild Veld fires, particularly in the Eastern Cape.

“We were deeply saddened to have learnt of the rage of veld fires that have victimized our members and many other commercial livestock farmers countrywide. We therefore wish to plead with government to speedily provide fair and just relief to all those affected” said Mahanjana

Mahanjana’s call comes soon after the organization’s members reported huge losses of their livestock due to wild veld fires. Media has also reported that both emerging and commercial farmers countrywide, millions of rands have been lost with Eastern Cape and the Free State provinces being the mostly affected regions.

NERPO and other industry role players, have recently appraised the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry of the need to fast track and properly manage agricultural disaster management fund, saying the delays that have been experienced in the past had resulted to some farmers having to close shop, something that has stifled growth and development of the emerging sector.

NERPO is the official mouthpiece of South Africa’s emerging livestock farmers.
