NERPO'S REACTION ON RESOLUTIONS OF THE NATIONAL LAND SUMMIT
01 Aug 2005

The National Emergent Red Meat Producers Organisation (NERPO) fully supports the resolutions made by the National Land Summit, held at Nasrec, Johannesburg between 27th and 31st of July 2005, as a collective action to review South Africa’s land reform programme. Over 1000 delegates, who attended the summit, were landless people, organised agriculture (emerging and commercial), business, political structures, key organs of government and many more.

“These resolutions are on one hand a true reflection of unanimity that characterized a fundamental debate of a united front that has championed a clear road map in repositioning the country’s land and agrarian reform programme, and on another a government’s recommitment, that land is a socio-economic resource that indeed equally and truly belongs to those who work and live in it” so said Mr Aggrey Mahanjana, the Group Managing Director of NERPO. NERPO has however called on government to speedily implement such resolutions to give a remarkable effect to a progress and impact of a skewed land reform programme.

Government has for the first time after the Constitution was conceived, convened such a gathering and has given a fair and free opportunity to interested parties of a land reform programme, to share their views on land reform programme and together find possible solutions that will not only expedite the pace of land reform but will also improve its impact on economic growth and sustainable development.

“Government now has our unanimous voice, and should ensure speedy implementation of the people’s voice for change” Mahanjana added. The resolutions also promote social and political transformation, equal access to land, and appear to be a gateway to economic inclusion of the historically disadvantaged farming communities. “If speedily implemented, the so said 5% contribution by black livestock emerging farmers could change tremendously” he said.

NERPO is a mouthpiece of the historical disadvantaged farming communities that owns over 47% of the country’s total livestock. NERPO has since its inception been spearheading socio-economic empowerment of the livestock emerging farmers, and has done so by amongst others strongly lobbied government for legislative review, financial and non-financial support.
