The Group Managing Director of the National Emergent Red Meat Producers’ Organisation (NERPO), Mr. Aggrey Mahanjana, has expressed displeasure on a significant cut of agricultural and rural development budget allocation for 2010.

“It is disappointing to note that agriculture has once again taken a knock from this year’s budget allocation. Funding for agriculture remains far below the recognized parameters such as those set out in the Maputo declaration of 2004, by NEPAD and the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), in which all SADC countries committed to ensuring that the agriculture and food security budget progressively increases to 10% of the national budget between 2004 and 2010” he said.

NERPO IS PERTURBED BY THE MEDIA REPORTS ABOUT LAND BANK - 28 Oct 2009
The National Emergent Red Meat Producers Organisation (NERPO) has noted with great concern the damning media reports about Land Bank’s alleged misappropriation of AgriBEE funds.

“If the Sunday Times recent reports about the Land Bank’s alleged squandering of AgriBEE funds are anything to go by, NERPO is extremely disheartened to have read about how the Land Bank has misdirected funds meant for AgriBEE projects. These immoral acts of self-enrichment are despicable, particularly since the funds that were allegedly squandered were meant to kick-start the AgriBEE which has not taken off since the Launch of the AgriBEE Charter. For example, companies like BAASA, whose major shareholders are NERPO and NAFU, have over the years failed to raise as little as R1 million from the Land Bank AgriBEE Fund in order to acquire equity in one of the highly strategic co-operatives in the Agricultural Sector”, argued the visibly unpleased Aggrey Mahanjana, the Group Managing Director of NERPO.

AGRIBUSINESS GROUP SOUGHT COLLECTIVE ACTION TO CRACK AGRIBEE BENCHMARKS - 28 May 2008
In a joint meeting held last weekend between the National Executive Council of NERPO and BAASA Holdings Ltd, collective action was pronounced as the only way with which to fast-track the stagnant Black Economic Empowerment in Agriculture otherwise known as the AgriBEE. “Since the inception of the democratic government there has not been a significant drive for Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) especially in the agri-value chain. Though the Agribusiness Group acknowledges the strides made by the Department of Agriculture in terms of food security, farmer support and development programmes, agriculture is far behind other departments like the Department of Minerals and Energy in ensuring that black individuals have a meaningful participation in Agri-business as it is contained in the Agriculture Sector Plan” said Aggrey Mahanjana, the Group Managing Director of NERPO.
